Ask ten anglers about barometric pressure and you'll get ten answers, most of them in a unit your weather app doesn't show. Here is the same chart written three ways — inches of mercury, millibars and kilopascals — what each band is generally taken to mean, and how to find out whether any of it holds on your water.
Barometric pressure is the weight of the air pressing down on the water. It's reported in inches of mercury (inHg) in the United States, millibars (mb) or hectopascals (hPa) almost everywhere else — those two are the same number — and kilopascals (kPa) in Canada. Standard pressure at sea level is 29.92 inHg, 1013.25 hPa, 101.3 kPa; above that counts as high, below it as low.

The trend beats the number
A single reading tells you very little. What anglers actually watch is which way the needle is moving, because that's what tells you where the weather is going — and the fish appear to respond to the change more than the level.
If you only ever record one thing about pressure, record whether it was rising, falling or flat.

Convert a pressure reading
One inch of mercury is 33.86 hPa (the same as 33.86 mb) or 3.386 kPa. If your forecast app and your fishing notes disagree on units, these are the readings that come up most often.

Treat the chart as a hypothesis, not a rule. Pressure never moves alone — it drops with cloud, wind, rain and falling light, and any of those can be the thing the fish actually reacted to. Guidance like this is what anglers repeat, not something the chart can prove for your lake.

How to test pressure on your water
- Before you fish, check the pressure in your phone's weather app and note whether it's rising, falling or flat.
- Log each catch as it happens, with the conditions — and put the pressure reading in the note field while you still remember it.
- Record the sessions where nothing happened too. A pattern measured only on good days isn't a pattern.
- After a season, look at where your catches actually cluster: pressure band, trend, or neither.
- Trust what your own log says over any chart, including this one.

The most commonly cited answer is a falling barometer in the hours before a front, and the band from roughly 29.60 to 30.00 inHg (1002–1016 mb, 100.2–101.6 kPa). High and steady above 30.50 inHg (1033 mb) is the range anglers most often call slow. It's guidance, not physics — the only way to know for your water is to log the conditions with each catch and look back at a season of them.
Is 1013 mb good for fishing?
1013 mb (29.92 inHg, 101.3 kPa) is standard sea-level pressure — the neutral middle. On its own it says nothing; what matters is whether it got there by falling from 1025 or climbing from 1000.
Do fish really bite before a storm?
It's the most widely repeated pattern in fishing, and it lines up with a falling barometer, dropping light and a rising breeze arriving together. Whether the fish are reacting to the pressure itself or to everything that arrives with it isn't settled — but the window before a front is worth fishing, and worth logging so you can check.
