2026 Standard Mileage Rate — and Every Rate Since 2023
The standard mileage rate is the amount a tax authority lets you deduct for each business mile you drive. It changes most years, so the rate you apply depends on the tax year the trip falls in — not the year you file.
Rates are set once a year by each tax authority and can change. Always confirm the current figure against the official source (IRS.gov, canada.ca, gov.uk, ato.gov.au) before you file. The figures below are the rates Milvo applies in-app.
IRS standard mileage rate by year (business)
United States — IRS business rate per mile
| Tax year | Rate per mile |
|---|---|
| 2026 | $0.67 |
| 2025 | $0.70 |
| 2024 | $0.67 |
| 2023 | $0.655 |
Because the rate is per tax year, a trip you drove in December 2025 is deducted at the 2025 rate even if you file in 2026. Milvo picks the right year's rate automatically from each trip's date, so a logbook that spans a rate change still totals correctly.
What the rate is worth to you
Your deduction is simply business miles × the rate for that year. Personal miles don't count, which is why sorting each drive matters.
Example: 12,000 business miles in 2025 × $0.70 = $8,400 you can deduct. At a 22% marginal rate that's roughly $1,848 less tax — far more than the price of any app you'd use to track it.
Standard mileage rates in other countries
Milvo also carries the official first-tier rates for Canada, the UK and Australia. Note the unit: the US and UK quote per mile, Canada and Australia quote per kilometre.
Official business rates (first tier) by region
| Region | Authority | Unit | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | IRS | per mile | $0.70 | $0.67 |
| Canada | CRA | per km | C$0.72 | C$0.72 |
| United Kingdom | HMRC (AMAP) | per mile | £0.45 | £0.45 |
| Australia | ATO | per km | A$0.88 | A$0.88 |
The UK AMAP rate of 45p applies to your first 10,000 business miles in a tax year; Canada's CRA rate steps down after the first 5,000 km. Milvo tracks the miles — check your authority's tiers for the exact treatment above those thresholds.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 2026 standard mileage rate?
Milvo applies $0.67 per business mile for the 2026 US tax year. The IRS publishes the official figure each fall, so confirm it on IRS.gov before filing — the rate can change year to year.
Does the mileage rate change every year?
Usually yes. The IRS reviews it annually based on the cost of operating a vehicle; some years it holds flat. That's why a log has to record the date of each trip — so each mile is valued at the rate for the year it was driven.
Do I use the rate from when I drove or when I file?
The year you drove. A trip on 20 December 2025 is deducted at the 2025 rate even though you file your return in 2026.
Can I still deduct mileage at the standard rate as an employee?
In the US, unreimbursed employee vehicle expenses are generally not deductible under current rules — the standard mileage deduction is mainly for the self-employed, 1099 contractors and business owners. Rules differ by country; check your authority.
